Post-doctoral research position in neutron star astrophysics and simulations

Applications are invited for an eighteen month research position, with a likely extension for another twelve, at the Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center in Warsaw for work with Professor Włodek Kluźniak’s group on simulation of neutron star accretion flows and jets, or possibly on the evolution of transitional pulsars. We welcome highly motivated applicants with a PhD in astrophysics or physics awarded not earlier than 7 years ago.

The position is financed by a generous grant of the Polish National Science Center, number 2019/33/B/ST9/01564, entitled „From Transitional Pulsars to ULXs - radiation, jets, and outflows in accreting neutron stars”.

The remuneration is highly competitive with local salaries, exceeding PLN 8 000 gross per month during the employment period.

A proven track record of research in the field under consideration is a prerequisite for the job. Expertise in transitional pulsar astrophysics or a strong background in MHD or GRMHD simulations will be a definite advantage for the candidates. The selected candidate will have a leading role in performing GRMHD simulations of accretion, MHD simulation of jets, or developing a theory of transitional pulsars, depending on the candidate’s background and interests.

In our group we have recently been performing radiative GRMHD simulations of neutron star and black hole accretion, as well MHD simulations for non-Kerr spacetimes and have an interest in the influence of plasma astrophysics on accretion physics.

Full consideration will be given to applications submitted by May 15, 2022. Review of applications will continue until the position is filled.

The expected employment starting date is as soon as practicable, preferably from  June 1,  2022.

Applications, including letters of reference may be submitted electronically, preferably in PDF format, at recruitment@camk.edu.pl (“attn. NS MHD”)

The application should include:

- a CV;

- a brief (no more than 4 pages) statement of purpose and description of research interests and experience;

- a copy of the PhD diploma,

- a scan of a signed EU GDPR form, available at:

- two (or more) confidential letters of reference by senior scientists familiar with the candidate's work submitted directly by the reference letters’ authors to the e-mail address recruitment@camk.edu.pl

Interested candidates are encouraged to seek additional information by e-mail, directly from Professor Kluźniak (wlodek@camk.edu.pl).
