Post-doctoral position in Evolution of Massive Binary Systems

Applications are invited for one postdoctoral position at the Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center of the Polish Academy of Sciences (NCAC PAS), in Warsaw, Poland, to study evolution of massive stars in context of the formation of gravitational waves sources: merging black holes and neutron stars.

Successful applicant will work with Prof. Chris Belczynski and join young and dynamic group on the project "Astrophysics of gravitational waves" founded by the National Science Center (grant MAESTRO 10, nr 2018/30/A/ST9/00050). The contract is for 3 years.

The main goal of the work is to establish the origin of LIGO/Virgo sources of gravitational waves and their connection to known populations of stars (e.g., X-ray binaries). The evolution of massive stars and the formation of black holes and neutron stars are of particular interest. Expertise in detailed stellar and binary evolutionary calculations (e.g. MESA), or population synthesis calculations, or neutron star/black hole formation will be useful for this position.

Applicants are expected to be fluent in English, have good publication record and have good knowledge of astrophysics, in particular in context of stellar evolution and compact objects. Successful applicant is expected to present and publish her/his results at international conferences and in scientific journals. Generous funds are available for research travel (conferences and longer research visits). Group of Prof. Belczynski is in close collaboration with top institutions in USA, Japan, United Kingdom and European Union.

Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Center Polish Academy of Sciences is a leading astronomical institute in Poland. It was established in 1978. The main subjects of research include: stellar astrophysics, binary systems, circumstellar matter, dense matter and neutron stars, black holes, accretion processes, structure and evolution of active galaxies, cosmology, extrasolar planets. The institute is involved in a number of international projects like H.E.S.S, CTA, Herschel, SALT, INTEGRAL, Fermi, and LIGO-VIRGO.

Applications will be collected till March 1, 2022. The winning candidate will start job on 1st April 2022.

Applications (in pdf format) should be sent to: recruitment@camk.edu.pl and must include:

- a CV with list of publications,
- a copy of the PhD diploma,
- a short statement of research achievements and plans (maximum 2 pages),
- a scan of a signed GDPR form - available at:

In addition, at least two letters of recommendation should be arranged and sent directly by their authors to the same e-mail address.

The competitive salary for the employment period is PLN 8376 gross per month.

Questions about the position can be sent directly to Prof. Belczynski: belczynski@camk.edu.pl
