Post-doctoral position in Stellar Dynamics and Evolution of Compact Binary Systems

Applications are invited for one post-doctoral position at the Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences (NCAC PAS), in Warsaw, Poland, to study evolution of compact binary stars in context of stellar dynamics and dynamical evolution of star clusters.

Successful applicant will work with Prof. Mirek Giersz and join group on the project "Compact Objects in Star Clusters as a Laboratory for Multi-Messenger and High Energy Astrophysics" founded by the National Science Centre (grant OPUS 21, nr 2021/41/B/ST9/01191). The contract is for 3 years.

The main goals of the work will be connected with ULXs, LMXBs and Double Compact Binaries in globular clusters from the point of view of their possible formation channels and influence of the cluster environment on their observational properties. Additionally, among many smaller tasks, he/she will be responsible for upgrades of population synthesis codes (BSE and StarTrack) and their deeper integration with the MOCCA code.

Applicants are expected to be fluent in English, have good publication record and have good knowledge of astrophysics, in particular in context of stellar evolution and compact objects with some knowledge about stellar dynamics and globular cluster evolution. Additionally, they should have some practical knowledge about population synthesis codes (e.g. BSE, StarTrack). Successful applicant is expected to present and publish her/his results at international conferences and in scientific journals. Generous funds are available for research travel (conferences and longer research visits). Group of Prof. Giersz is in close collaboration with top institutions in China, Japan, United Kingdom and European Union.

Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Centre Polish Academy of Sciences is a leading astronomical institute in Poland. It was established in 1978. The main subjects of research include: stellar astrophysics, binary systems, circumstellar matter, dense matter and neutron stars, black holes, accretion processes, structure and evolution of active galaxies, cosmology, extrasolar planets. The institute is involved in a number of international projects like H.E.S.S, CTA, Herschel, SALT, INTEGRAL, Fermi, and LIGO-VIRGO.

The competitive salary for the employment period is PLN 8376 gross per month.
