From the dense molecular nurseries to the violent stellar deaths, a star's life cycle can be summarized pictorially by the indispensable Hertzsprung-Russell (HR) diagram. Galaxies are, after all, the culmination of stars and star clusters - some dormant, others are active. Do they also have a life-cycle similar to their stellar counterparts? An HR-like diagram for active galaxies?
