My main scientific interests are high energy studies of accreting black holes in X-ray binary stars and active galactic nuclei. Extreme gravity of black holes means that matter accreting onto them has to lose a lot of energy. This energy, or at least a significant part of it, is somehow transformed into radiation and most of the radiation is in high energy range: ultraviolet, X-ray and gamma-ray. By studying the radiation we hope to learn something about the structure and physical processes in the accretion flows. This knowledge supplements and guides physical simulations of accretion: advanced as they are, current simulations are not yet advanced enough to reproduce physical processes of emission of X-rays. Observational data provide thus guidelines as to what kind of effects need to be reproduced.
My recent projects concentrate on combined spectral-temporal studies of X-rays from X-ray binary stars. One subject is modeling the so called Fourier-frequency resolved spectra, another one is studying energy dependencies of quasi-periodic oscillations (with my former PhD student Malgosia Sobolewska). I am also involved in projects on the influence of relativistic effects on X-ray spectra and variability (with Andrzej Niedzwiecki), and on highly-obscured active galactic nuclei (with Greg Madejski, Chris Done and others).
